Vertebra: A Flexible Floor Lamp that Redefines Lighting Design

Inspired by folding studies, structures, and techniques, this flexible floor lamp is a testament to the endless possibilities of merging plane materials into multi-layered strips. With its innovative folding concept, Vertebra allows for the creation of an infinite chain of lampshades, each representing a single body.

What sets Vertebra apart is its ability to satisfy individual creativity in an unlimited range of deforming. The lampshade, supported by a goose-neck rod, maintains its shape while providing stability to the folding. This unique design feature allows users to shape the lamp in various ways, from rings and waves to straight or twisted forms, ensuring a well-defined curve without any buckles.

The realization of Vertebra involves a sandwich construction for the lampshade, consisting of multiple flexible and rigid layers merged together into a single stripe. This stripe is then folded using a specific concept to create a chain of vessels connected with joints. Each vessel houses LEDs, which provide the light and are connected through the vessel with the rod, offering maximum freedom in shaping the lamp. The lamp's base, made of cast iron, ensures stability and a solid stand.

With its dimensions of 220mm in length, 220mm in width, and 2000mm in height, Vertebra is a statement piece that combines contemporary design with a well-elaborated process of cost-efficient and resource-saving production. Its ability to transform a single plane sheet into a fully functional floor lamp is a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of its designer, Christoph Guenther.

Vertebra was born out of a project that began in June 2015 in Berlin, Germany. Through extensive research and overcoming various creative and technical challenges, Guenther was able to create a lamp that not only showcases his innovative folding technique but also meets the functional requirements of a floor lamp.
